Phishing Scams

What is it? Phishing happens when criminals try to trick you into sharing personal or financial information by pretending to be someone you trust.

Phishing attempts often arrive by email, text message, or social media. They may look legitimate; sometimes the scammer will feature bank logos, urgent wording, or fake security alerts. Never click links or open attachments from unexpected messages. Select Bank will never ask for your password, PIN, one-time code, or full account number through email or text.

If something feels off, contact us directly using the number on our website, not the one in the message.

Spoofing

What is it? Fraudsters use “spoofing” to make calls, emails, or websites appear official.

Spoofing allows criminals to manipulate caller ID or email addresses so they look like Select Bank, or even a government agency. They often use pressure tactics, like claiming your account is locked or that urgent action is required.

Remember: We will not request personal information or ask you to move money during an unexpected call. Hang up and call us back at (434) 455-1700.
Always check website URLs carefully before logging into online banking.

Debit Card Fraud & Skimming

What is it? Skimming devices and card-reading scams can steal your card information at ATMs and gas pumps.

Tips to Protect Yourself:

  • Use ATMs in well-lit, high-traffic areas.
  • Before inserting your card, check for loose card readers, unusual tape, or bulky attachments.
  • Regularly monitor online and mobile banking for unfamiliar transactions.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and cover the keypad when entering your PIN.

With Select Bank’s card controls, you can freeze your card instantly if something looks suspicious. As always, if you suspect any fraudulent activity on your card, reach out to us immediately at (434) 455-1700.

Account Takeover Attempts

What is it? Fraudsters try to gain access to your account by stealing or guessing your login information.

They may use phishing, malware, or leaked passwords from other websites to attempt logins.

Tips to Protect Yourself:

  • Enable two-factor authentication.
  • Create strong, unique passwords.
  • Avoid password reuse across accounts.

If you receive unexpected login alerts or text codes you didn’t request, contact Select Bank immediately.

Tips for Staying Safe Online

A few simple habits can greatly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of online fraud.

  • Keep your devices updated.
  • Use antivirus protection.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi when accessing financial accounts.
  • Regularly check your account with Online Banking so you’re aware of withdrawals, transfers, or unusual activity.
